Final Project – Final Week Summary

Last week, things were going pretty well for Prez, until the fire nation attacked the unfortunate shooting happened. This week, Prez has changed jobs! As happens in season 4, Prez gets a job as an 8th grade math teacher. He updated his facebook, twitter, LinkedIn, and blog to announce his new job. He also tweeted a few times to reflect his feelings as a new teacher.

He also made an announcement earlier today that he will spend his first year teaching working on a new book! This book will be titled Learning to Teach: You can Teach too, and is currently scheduled to come out in June so I hope you all put it on your amazon wish lists! (I made the new book cover using this image). He also tweeted and updated facebook with his new announcement.

Final Project – Week 3 update

For my third week of my final project, I have decided to focus on the events of Season 3 of The Wire. In season 3, things are going pretty well for Pryzblewski, until he shoots and kills plain-clothed cop.

In my narrative of these events, Prez comes under fire in the newspaper for the shooting. On Nov 28th, the newspaper reported on the shooting and questions the motives. On Nov 30th, the press point out that he has a past of violence and wrote a self help book. Prez defended himself against both of these articles on his blog, and linked to his responses on his Twitter and Facebook. I figured his Twitter and Facebook would be pretty quiet for a few days after this, so there won’t be anything the next few days.

For this week, I created a new assignment to create a newspaper (worth 3 stars). For my newspapers, I used a template found here, and news articles from the Baltimore Sun found here, here, and here. I then wrote the two articles about Prez on my own, and included a screen shot from the show in one.  Here are the two newspaper articles that I created for this week :Prez - NewspaperPrez - Newspaper2

Week 13 and 14 Summary

I’m really enjoying Prez’s storyline on The Wire right now (which I am paying closer attention to because of my final project). I am really interested in the school kids and how they are connected to the game. The class for kids with behavioral problems is really sad but realistic, especially when they are talking about how the kids only act the way they do because they know they won’t do well in life anyways. I feel like that is something that a lot of people don’t understand so I’m really glad they put it in the show. I do wish they were showing more of Cutty right now than they are.

During these two weeks, I have continued to work on my final project, which I won’t write about here because the project gets it’s own summary post (here and here). I am having a lot of fun with this project and it’s wrapping up now so that all I really have left is to have Prez change jobs.

For assignments, I did the sports logo mashup (worth 3 stars), and the inappropriate laughter assignment (worth 3 stars).

Final Project – Week 2 update

For this week, Prez is continuing to promote his book, this week with a radio advert, and promoting his Goodreads page.

Here is the link to the post that Prez made on his blog about the radio advert (he also linked to the blog post through Twitter and Facebook).  I made this advert by recording my voice and lowering the pitch to make myself sound more manish through iMovie. I then added this lovely music to make it more cheesy and happy sounding. For a radio advert for a cheesy book, I really liked the way this advert turned out. I’m going to contribute this assignment to this radio advertisement assignment and say it’s worth 3 stars.

Also this week, Prez posted about his new page on Goodreads. I really wanted to make him a fake Goodreads page because Goodreads is one of my favorite websites, and he wrote a book so it made sense. I wasn’t sure what assignment this would count as , so I made my own (worth 3 stars).

I made this by staking a screen shot of a book page on Goodreads (specifically this one because everyone should read it). I then used photoshop to coverup all of the wrong text and added in my own. I also covered up the book picture with my own.

This upcoming week will be when Prez shoots the cop, so I will be putting out some newspaper articles and having Prez respond to them, after which he will change careers. Stay tuned!

Weeks 11 and 12 Summary

The Wire got super intense these two weeks. I honestly thought that the season 3 finale set the series up to be over (even though I knew it wasn’t because I was already assigned to work on the next season). If the show had ended there though, it would have been wrapped up nicely. I really like season 4 so far, because I like how it is looking at schools and the education system. The show has already shown how the different aspects of the city that it has already looked at has affected children, but not it is mainly about children.

For my assignments, I censored a scene from The Wire (worth 5 stars), and I made the video essay (worth 5 stars), and worked with a group to swede season 3 episode 11 (worth 5 stars).

I participated in my third and final video discussion on Tuesday (11/04). On that same day, I listened live to the commentary on ds106 radio, and live tweeted it.

I have been working on my final project already because I want to space it all out over a few weeks as the story progresses. See my final project week 1 post here.

Final Project Week 1 Update

So for my ds106 final project (sniff, sniff) I am using Roland “Prez” Pryzbylewski, everyone’s favorite cop killer from The Wire. But seriously, I do have a weird soft spot for this character. He does awful stuff in seasons 1 and 3, but still seems to be a good guy that you pity.

I decided to have him write a self-help book on anger management (pictured below). In my version of the story, after he pistol-whips that poor kid in season 1, Prez does a lot of work with a therapist to get over his issues. He has to work through his anger issues about being in a stressful job that he doesn’t necessarily like. He also as to get through what his anger made him do. He was so successful in this that he decides to share his success with the world. In his book he is open about the incident, why it happened, and how much better he has gotten since then. He currently promotes his book on a Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and personal blog.

In the first week, I have put out information about his book, on his blog, twitter, and Facebook.  He also is doing a book signing at local book stores in Baltimore, which he also advertised on his blog. He also put out various random tweets about his life.

For this week, I sort of did this book cover assignment (worth 3 stars), and a poster assignment (worth 3 stars). For the book cover assignment I used this image and photoshop. For the poster, I used the book cover I had already made, photoshop and this article about bookstores in Maryland.

In the weeks to come, more advertising will be done on his social media sites about the book. But tragedy will strike when in week 3 he murders a cop (as seen in The Wire season 3). Stay tuned!

Week 10 Summary

I was very interested by the Ken Burns video, and the How to Read a Movie article. They will obviously help me with the video unit in this class, but I am also in the US History in Film class and we are working on our projects right now. Everything that Ken Burns was saying about how stories are manipulations really made me think about the film I am working on in a different way, and I think this will make my project better.

For my 10 stars of video assignments this week, I made a Lord of the Rings silent film trailer (worth 4.5 stars), Game of Thrones chipmunk style (worth 2.5 stars), and reversed a scene from The Wire to make a backwards shootout (worth 2 stars).

Week 9 Summary

In The Wire this week, I am really enjoying the relocation of the drug dealers. I think the way they are going about it, by forcing the midlevel people to order the move, it really smart. I am way more interested in this way of dealing with drug dealers than the ways the show has been previously been approaching it, even with the taps.  The burner phones are definitely more interesting than anything else they have dealt with because they are always changing. The fact that the dealers are driving all over just to avoid getting caught buying a bunch of phones for a drug organization. The internal politics that are shown in the COMSTAT meetings is interesting, but it makes me really mad (which I guess it is supposed to) because it is so bureaucratic.

I added Lauren’s Sketch a Screenshot, Carmela’s Classical Rap mashup, and the London Bridge Techno mashup to the inspire page.  I also made my blog posts to explain my thought on the inspiration [ Sketch a Screenshot, Classical Rap Mashup, London Bridge Techno].

On Tuesday night, I streamed and live tweeted the TDSN radio show and then I made a blog post about the experience.

Week 8 Summary

I am liking The Wire more and more with each season. I’m very unhappy that Kima seems to be becoming McNulty because I really like her and I want her to be happy, but she is really pissing me off right now. I am very happy that McNulty is doing something about D’s faked suicide, because I really didn’t like how they left that. Partially legalizing drugs in certain neighborhoods is a really interesting concept and I really am interested in the tension it is causing both between the cops and between the cops and the drug dealers.

This week, I did my second of my three video discussions (even though my audio wasn’t working for some reason). I did my one daily create, and my post on the radio show progress.

Week 7 Summary

The Wire this week was really interesting. I did not see the thing with Sobatka coming (although in hindsight I should have). Th ending to the season was also handled really well. I like that this season finale had the same feel as the last one. The montage and the court case and people getting away. Even though they didn’t put all of the bad guys away, it still felt realistic and there still seemed to be closure because it was a good season ending.

For my assignments for the week, I really wanted to do an assignment with a dramatic reading of lyrics set to other music, so I made the assignment (worth 3.5 stars) and then did my post of it as a tutorial. The version that I did for it was super cheesy, but it was really fun to make so I’m very happy that I did this assignment. I also did the cheesy radio ad for your school (worth 3 stars), and made a UMW radio ad that is so cheesy, I wouldn’t put it past the school to actually use it. I also made a radio bumper (worth 1.5 stars) to be used for the radio assignment, and a All Me in a Scene assignment (worth 2 stars).

My two daily creates for the week – October 6th and 8th
